Fort Collins Cop, Burglar Wounded in Shootout

Fort Collins Police Department have released the names of the police officer and burglary suspect who were shot and injured at a Fort Collins home late Christmas night.

The suspect has been identified as 24-year-old Loveland resident Andrew Nardello. The officers involved in the shooting are Sgt. Richard Zeigler and Officer Allen Heaton, who was wounded.

Zeigler has been with Fort Collins Police Services for 21 years and Heaton joined in January 2007.

Zeigler and Heaton drove to the 2400 block of West Stuart Street last night at 11:23 p.m. on a report of suspicious activity, Rita Davis, Fort Collins police spokeswoman said.

When they arrived they were confronted by an “intruder in the residence,” she said.

Shots were exchanged.

Nardello was shot once and Officer Heaton was shot mutiple times.

Nardello and Heaton were rushed to the Medical Center of the Rockies for treatment non-life threatening injuries.

Police are investigating the shooting.

Both Zeigler and Heaton have been placed on administrative leave during the investigation, as is customary after a police-involved shooting.
