WYTHEVILLE, Va. – A daylong standoff at a small-town post office in western Virginia ended last night with three hostages being released and a suspect in custody, police said.
Police had earlier cordoned off three blocks after an armed man in a wheelchair entered the post office and took a number of people hostage. The man made no demands other than to ask for a pizza, said Pete Rendina, spokesman for the US Postal Inspection Service.
A SWAT team responded and began negotiating with the suspect, who released the hostages and came out of the building, state police Sergeant Michael Conroy said. Shots were fired earlier, but there were no reports of injuries. Relatives said the hostages had been able to talk to them by phone.
