Clip-On Cameras May Be Wave of the Future For Law Enforcement

WATAUGA, TX – The first recording equipment police officers carried were voice recorders attached to the shoulders of their uniforms.
Then came video cameras mounted in patrol cars.
And now in Watauga and other jurisdictions in the state, police officers are wearing clip-on video cameras.
In recent weeks, three Watauga motorcycle officers have been equipped with Vievu cameras to record traffic stops.
Patrol officers still have video recorders in their cars.
“Down the road, I could see where our patrol officers will have the clip-on cameras along with video recorders in their cars,” Watauga Police Chief Rande Benjamin said. “For us, we just need cameras for our motorcycle officers because they didn’t have any type of video cameras.”
In Texas, 45 to 50 law enforcement agencies use the cameras, according to Heidi Traverso, a spokeswoman for Vievu, the Seattle company that designs and manufactures the cameras.
Across the country, 600 law enforcement agencies have equipped their officers with the cameras, said Traverso, a 15-year Seattle police veteran.
“It’s one switch, no wires, and you clip it on and go,” Traverso said. “It’s a tool that officers will be using.”

Ive used a Digital Voice Recorder in my work shirt pocket for the last 4 or so years. Now I'm using a Digital Video Camera that I grabbed on line a while ago, being an MD80. I've used it for about 4 months and it's an absolute cracker, (although now already Atari in Wii land), but so far I've sorted a pursuit where the driver changed seats with the passenger mid way then screamed 'fit up' - till the video was produced & it became a plea; a complaint where I apparently abused and bashed a traffic subject - till video produced and all was hunky dorey - showing HE was a wanker and I was quite suave; and lately in an interview with a boss re a minor discip matter, (wow what polite manners he had too!!). I feel regardless of what we all think these things will be part and parcel with modern day policing soon enough. I therefore reckon jump on board and grab it by the goolies n use it to YOUR advantage. Strewth with the availability of camera phones in nearly everyones pocket, (as per chiefmillan said) coppers are always in the (filming) firig line so why not turn it around on the idiots around us.
Anyway - Merry Christmas all. Go Well. Stay Safe.

This may seem like big brother watching, but as we all know you almost need video footage to prove your actions or exonerate yourself against accusations these days. An officer's word unfortunately doesn't mean as much as it used to. If used properly under departmental guidelines, these cameras could benefit us just as much as squad car and interview room cameras we all depend on now.

Good points and bad points. A dascam has saved my rear a few times when good friends of people in high places have gotten a ticket. We'll see

Not sure this would work too well out in the field... "Dear Chief, nobody was more surprised than I when my camera lens and microphone became too encrusted with dirt and debris to be of any use..."

These cameras in this article are not the only ones available. leacorp.com has the Scorpion Micro DV for $125. The Scorpion is smaller and has upgradable memory capacity by use of MicroSD cards. My entire department has them and they are awesome. They have proven one of the most worthwhile investments we have ever made.

Cool idea........why don't we try a 12 month field test to check out the system's reliability?..........by putting these cameras on all of our Federal, State and Local politicians! If the system is of any real value we should be able to clean out the septic tank of politics in short order! Then we can have the mini-version of the cameras surgically implanted in the foreheads of ALL convicted felons! I am really warming up to this idea......

The cost of these gadgets needs to come down a lot before many departments will choose to use them!

I guess if you play the game right all they can do is help you....So long as they don't create any limitations in doing the job it looks like big brother is going to win...Still think it is a collossal waste of money..Money that could be better spent on putting more bodies on the streets.
