DES PLAINES, Ill. – Authorities in suburban Chicago say a Des Plaines police officer fatally shot a 24-year-old man who refused to drop the ax he was holding.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office says Krzysztof Kaczor (KRISH’-stof kot-CHUR’) was pronounced dead early Monday at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
Des Plaines Police Chief Jim Prandini says his officer encountered Kaczor after responding to a report of shots being fired. He says Kaczor was running through the neighborhood carrying a long-handled ax.
Prandini says the officer ordered Kaczor to drop the ax, but the man instead held the ax in a threatening manner and approached the officer. That’s when the officer opened fire.
Police are investigating the incident.
