LANSING, Mich. – Twenty-eight Michigan State Police troopers laid off almost six months ago are being called back to work, thanks to an infusion of federal stimulus money.

State police say in a statement Friday that the troopers will be recalled Jan. 11 and will return to their previous work sites.

Academy Resources

About of 100 troopers were laid off June 28 as the state struggled to balance its budget. Days earlier, members of the Michigan State Police Troopers Association voted against a furlough plan that would have temporarily cut their pay to avoid layoffs of low seniority workers.

Under the state’s new 2009-2010 budget, 55 of them were called back to work Nov. 16. Fifteen troopers remain on layoff.

The recalls will bring the number of troopers to 1,026.

Glad to see them going back to work. I hope the remaining 15 get called back. That would be the best christmas gift for those families.

They need to be put to work, but the "Stimulus" plan is the wrong way to go about it. How long will this money last? More importantly, what happens when it runs out? This plan sounds similar to the "Trojan horse" of 100,000 cops on the street under Slick Willie in the 90's. The "federal money" ran out in a couple of years and then the local & state agencies had to either come up with salary money or cut positions.

If we could keep more of OUR money in the states, we'd be in far better shape and chances are the troopers wouldn't have had to have been laid off in the first place.

As one stellar example, if we disbanded the unconstitutional Department of Education, we could apply $46.7 Billion (with a B) towards necessary functions like cops and firemen and even teachers.

Again, glad the guys and gals are back to work, but hope they don't end up on a roller coaster of employment. Thumbs down for the method/source, thumbs up for them being back to work, so no vote on this one.

Glad to hear they are back on the job. Wish they all could be back on, but I suppose there isn't enough money for everyone to go around.

As a cop in Michigan I'm glad there coming back. They do what they can with the little manpower they have but it takes alot of stress off the rest of us.

We are very happy. We need these guys back on the job. I noted a couple people stating The Michigan State Police have too few men to do the job. They could use more officers, but they still do a magnificent job with current manpower. It is difficult to understand the critical importance of pre-hire background checks and top class training for a great Police Agency.

I do not care how bad things get, you never lay off COPS or Firemen, are ya stupid, layoff politicians! they are mostlty Millionares anyway!
The $160,000 a year a Michigan Politican gets equals 3 Troopers!
Who would you rather investigate a prowler at your rural farm, a stoopid Patrician member of the Plutocracy or a Michigan Hardcharging Trooper and two of his High-speed Low- drag partners?????
    God Bless the MSP!!!

TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE. How a state as large as Michigan can get by with ONLY 1,000 troopers is beyond me. NOBAMA dollars have not done much good for LE.

Good news, How bout cutting some federal handouts and stop sending US money to other countries! Then we could afford to keep every cop working and hire more.
