Boy Attempts to Carjack Uniformed, Off Duty Officer

Boy Attempts to Carjack Uniformed, Off Duty Officer

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette via YellowBrix

December 15, 2009

A 14-year-old boy attempted to carjack an off-duty Pittsburgh police officer at gunpoint yesterday, but he was foiled when the officer, who was wearing her uniform, got out of her car and chased him down.

Officer Caytlin Wood was sitting in her own car yesterday afternoon, idling on Pearl Street in Bloomfield, when a group of five teenagers caught her attention, police said.

Crooks Are Stupid

She called for backup, but while she was on the phone, one of the teenagers, the 14-year-old boy, walked toward her car and said something to her. When she started to roll down her window, the teenager pointed a gun at her head and told her to get out of the car.

When Officer Wood opened her car door, the teenager ran away. She ran after him, catching him about one block away and retrieving the gun he had used.

All five teenagers in the group were arrested. Two were 14, one was 15, one was 16 and one was 17.

All of them were charged with robbery of a motor vehicle and criminal conspiracy.

The 14-year-old boy who pointed the gun at Officer Wood was also charged with illegal possession of a firearm, according to police.

Officer Wood had been preparing to leave for her 4 p.m. to midnight shift when she noticed the teenagers.

Police said she was in her uniform at the time, but her city police insignia was obscured by a sweatshirt she was wearing.

......So they peaked her interest, and she allowed them to come up to her car? I'm sorry, but we're lucky that she's alive right now. Anyone coming up to my car, without me waving them over, gets the gun out of the holster. Maybe not at them, put it's gonna be ready to go. What happened to the situational awareness here? Are the use of deadly force laws mystically different in PA?

Fortunate for the officer that it worked out the way it did, having said that I would have taken care of business right there. It is true that God looks out for the faithful, weak, helpless, and fools. For those who might not know which one the kid was, he would rate in the fools catagory.

So she was in her personal car, with her "badge" was covered. These kids thought they were stealing just someones car, when in fact (and stupidly) they had to choose her car, a law enforcement officers car. Stupid. Lets all be thankful she didn't get fired at; that boy could have fired once at gun point to the head and she'd be gone...
Wonder what punishment he's receiving. Man I wish I got to see his face when he realized it was a cop.
Let this be a lesson to you criminals out there. Someone may have regular clothes on, but you never know if they're a cop, so don't test it
