Boy Attempts to Carjack Uniformed, Off Duty Officer

Boy Attempts to Carjack Uniformed, Off Duty Officer

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette via YellowBrix

December 15, 2009

A 14-year-old boy attempted to carjack an off-duty Pittsburgh police officer at gunpoint yesterday, but he was foiled when the officer, who was wearing her uniform, got out of her car and chased him down.

Officer Caytlin Wood was sitting in her own car yesterday afternoon, idling on Pearl Street in Bloomfield, when a group of five teenagers caught her attention, police said.

Crooks Are Stupid

She called for backup, but while she was on the phone, one of the teenagers, the 14-year-old boy, walked toward her car and said something to her. When she started to roll down her window, the teenager pointed a gun at her head and told her to get out of the car.

When Officer Wood opened her car door, the teenager ran away. She ran after him, catching him about one block away and retrieving the gun he had used.

All five teenagers in the group were arrested. Two were 14, one was 15, one was 16 and one was 17.

All of them were charged with robbery of a motor vehicle and criminal conspiracy.

The 14-year-old boy who pointed the gun at Officer Wood was also charged with illegal possession of a firearm, according to police.

Officer Wood had been preparing to leave for her 4 p.m. to midnight shift when she noticed the teenagers.

Police said she was in her uniform at the time, but her city police insignia was obscured by a sweatshirt she was wearing.

Good job, brings to mind not too long ago in Tucson when a fool attempted to take a SWAT officers POV as he was leaving work. Bad guy pointed a toy gun at the officer, bad guy will never point anything at anyone ever again. Great Result!

I think even though these youth did what they did, they still knew what they were doing. They are human beings with a conscience and they should know right from wrong. His crime attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, which is a higher level of authority. Get what anyone else get's for his actions.

Sometimes it just sucks to be the bad guy. Ever have one of them days when ya can't even steal a car without some crazy woman going off on you? In reality, glad that Officer Wood was able to hook up the jerk and his pals. Pays to remain observant at all times and she just proved it. Good job and glad she's on our side.

One of my Officers was walking home from work as part of her PT program. A subject grabbed her and draged her into a building under construction telling her all the sexual acts he intended force on her...he died from the single gunshot she fired over her shoulder into his neck. Subject picked the wrong lady.

A similar thing happened to a co-worker when I was a cop in Kentucky. She was on her way home from work in her personal vehicle, stopped at an intersection, and a local dirtbag knocked on her window to sell her some crack. Gotta love the smart ones!

I'm guessing he ditched the gun when he saw she was a cop otherwise I am concerned about her decission to chase them down instead of shooting them. Anyway I am sure we don't have the whole story but it sounds like she did a good job.
