Boy Attempts to Carjack Uniformed, Off Duty Officer

Boy Attempts to Carjack Uniformed, Off Duty Officer

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette via YellowBrix

December 15, 2009

A 14-year-old boy attempted to carjack an off-duty Pittsburgh police officer at gunpoint yesterday, but he was foiled when the officer, who was wearing her uniform, got out of her car and chased him down.

Officer Caytlin Wood was sitting in her own car yesterday afternoon, idling on Pearl Street in Bloomfield, when a group of five teenagers caught her attention, police said.

Crooks Are Stupid

She called for backup, but while she was on the phone, one of the teenagers, the 14-year-old boy, walked toward her car and said something to her. When she started to roll down her window, the teenager pointed a gun at her head and told her to get out of the car.

When Officer Wood opened her car door, the teenager ran away. She ran after him, catching him about one block away and retrieving the gun he had used.

All five teenagers in the group were arrested. Two were 14, one was 15, one was 16 and one was 17.

All of them were charged with robbery of a motor vehicle and criminal conspiracy.

The 14-year-old boy who pointed the gun at Officer Wood was also charged with illegal possession of a firearm, according to police.

Officer Wood had been preparing to leave for her 4 p.m. to midnight shift when she noticed the teenagers.

Police said she was in her uniform at the time, but her city police insignia was obscured by a sweatshirt she was wearing.

Hopefully this will be a wake up call for these young kids. You know you better give up your life of crime when the person you pick to car jack is a female police officer. Great job catching these idiots!

I'm sure after the court gives these kids a slap on the wrist we'll be reading about them in the near future. Very likely in the obituaries.

WOW! it is really sad how young kids are getting involved in gang activity. i belive there needs to be a overhual of the penalties for minors, and any criminal linked to a gang or gang activity should get a more harsh penalty. gangs need to be crushed!

Stupid is, Stupid will be ! I hope every single one of these Felon Trainees will get some serious hard time with labor attached. It's also a reflection of their parents, of whom I suspects were "career idiots themselves". It sure sounds to me that she's entitled to overtime pay and hopefully, she wouldn't get "nailed for missing shift change" 1

Nothing like carjacking a cop in uniform who has a gun. I would have shot him in the bum.

Glad it went the way it did. Commendable actions by Officer Wood - starting with calling in suspicious activity. Now if we could only count on our criminal justice system to make the charges stick. You think it's a coincidence that the youngest gang member was the gunman? Criminal conspiracy for starters; how about armed assault of an officer? They should all be tried as adults if you ask me. I also wonder where these perps got the weapon.

my comment on the the officer, who, car was almost hijacked, for one, she should have push the door open as hard as she could, then she would;nt have to run him down.

when i was on patrol, at two apt complexes, there was about 5 black males doing stupid stuff, and decided, he was going to come on private property, and show off in from of his guys, but i punked him out. which did'nt make him look to good. then i had to put cuffs on a boy about 12 years old, because he would'nt listen to me. he tried to fight me, but for him it was a losing battle.

I love these kinds of stories when the kids are caught. Arresting juveniles can be so anti-climactic since they're usually released to their parents. Good job to the officer though!

some kids now a days are just plain stupid. If that happened here in illinois, that would have been aggravated assault to a police officer. FELONS
