Boy Attempts to Carjack Uniformed, Off Duty Officer
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette via YellowBrix
December 15, 2009
A 14-year-old boy attempted to carjack an off-duty Pittsburgh police officer at gunpoint yesterday, but he was foiled when the officer, who was wearing her uniform, got out of her car and chased him down.
Officer Caytlin Wood was sitting in her own car yesterday afternoon, idling on Pearl Street in Bloomfield, when a group of five teenagers caught her attention, police said.
She called for backup, but while she was on the phone, one of the teenagers, the 14-year-old boy, walked toward her car and said something to her. When she started to roll down her window, the teenager pointed a gun at her head and told her to get out of the car.
When Officer Wood opened her car door, the teenager ran away. She ran after him, catching him about one block away and retrieving the gun he had used.
All five teenagers in the group were arrested. Two were 14, one was 15, one was 16 and one was 17.
All of them were charged with robbery of a motor vehicle and criminal conspiracy.
The 14-year-old boy who pointed the gun at Officer Wood was also charged with illegal possession of a firearm, according to police.
Officer Wood had been preparing to leave for her 4 p.m. to midnight shift when she noticed the teenagers.
Police said she was in her uniform at the time, but her city police insignia was obscured by a sweatshirt she was wearing.

With all the officer killings of late, a better headline would have been" Officer kills suspect attempting to carjack her vehicle at gun point".

Great job by the Officer!! I can only imagine if it were not a cop, but instead a civilian, male or female, I'm sure the outcome would have been a lot different.
Maugwa, I could not have said it any better. I too play this scenario over in my head, and the out come is with the POS being DRT (Dead Right There)!!
One day I was sitting in my Hummer waiting for the light to change, and some POS walked up to my passenger side door and pulls on the handle, but the door was locked. I put my tinted windows down, and he got a close up look at the business end of my Springfield Armory Micro Compact .45. My man was "lost" and needed directions. I told him if he did not walk away, I'd show him where the Morgue was. Needless to say, he ran. Some People, I'll tell ya.

It's gratifying to hear cases like this involving female officers. Because sometimes they get a bad rap from those that are less experienced or trained. And its really not the case, in this country we have some of the toughest women LEO's on the planet. Down here on my turf, you don't want to mess with the women in blue or you will match the color. Good job PPD officer wood!!

What a scary scenario but she acted in courage and showed those little punks that our job keeps going even after facing near death, I hope the judge beats the shit out of them with justice...or atleast a 15 to 20 in state prison.

I hope the judge isn't going to slap them on their hands and send them back to their parents. Why that would be "cruel and unusual punishment."
