Sword Attacker Dies Soon After TASER Hit

HAMPTON, Va. — A sword-wielding man died early Friday, hours after Hampton police twice used a TASER on him.

It was the first such reported death since officers there began carrying the devices in 2003, said Paula Scheck, a Hampton Police Department spokeswoman. No deaths have been reported in the three South Hampton Roads cities that widely outfit officers with TASERs.

According to a news release from Hampton police, officers responded to a complaint involving an emergency custody order in the first block of Overlook Court about 11 p.m. Thursday. When the 36-year-old man refused to come to the door, police called one of his relatives, who came to the scene.

When officers entered the home, the man swung a samurai-style sword at them, police said. Officers used the TASER on him once, and a second time when he continued to threaten them .

The man stopped breathing, and officers called medics and performed CPR. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:15 a.m., police said.

Police identified the man as Hatchel Pate Adams III of Hampton. Officers involved were placed on administrative leave while the department conducts an internal investigation, according to the news release.

The Suffolk Police Department began carrying TASERs in June 2007. Norfolk added them in February 2008, followed by Virginia Beach this April.

Suffolk has said TASERs have resulted in fewer abuse complaints. But the conducted energy devices made headlines in Norfolk in October 2008 when a police officer used a TASER three times on a brain-damaged woman.

Amnesty International claims that more than 300 people have died after being struck with TASERs. The group says the devices were responsible in about 50 of those cases.

Drug intoxication accounted for most of the other deaths.

LET's see the toxicology report before we start the blame game. A level playing field to discuss the matter is a good start.

The suspect was tazed twice, if the tazer killed him, why didn't he die after the first use? Of course, once the tazer is turned off, the charge remains the body for about 0.000000003 sec. so maybe it was a lingering effect, at least if he died within 0.00000003 sec. of tazer use.

I'd like to see the toxicology report from the autopsy. Most of these "Tazer Deaths" have been contributed more to intoxicants (drugs) in the system than the actual tazer.
Either way, glad the officers are ok!! I'm not going to second guess their choice of Tazer vs Firearm. I wasn't there.

Soo the officer did what he had to do stop the attacker yielding a mighty big big knife that is the weapon used to kill in some culutures. A samurai
sword can wack a man in 2 very quickly. disemburse him to chopped meat. This deadhead had to be stopped very quickly, one fatal blow and curtains. Good thinking officer sometimes you don't have time to just dance with life threatening actions, get r done....

Irregaardless (sp) of whether or not the officer pulled a gun or a tazer, that is not our place to judge the officer, we were not there, we did not experience what he did, we each react in different ways. However, the criminal was an idiot for doing what he did, he was on drugs and that is more than likely what caused his death.

Well done to the officers involved for doing their jobs.

Someone pulls a sword on me they are getting shot! Glad the guy is dead either way!

For those who want to blame the taser for people's deaths..... why is it that no Cadets in Police Academies die from being tazed? People who die after being tazed are so drunk or dopped up that they would just as quickly die from any scuffle with police.

This guy was more than likely on something to have died.

Wasn't there the same complaints about OC spray when it first became popular?

Guy has a sword and you pull a taser? Here is the problem. If they shot him the same orgs would say you should have Tasered him. i will reserve my opinion until the medical exam comes back.

Amnesty International? Yeah, they're the people we want to rely on for ACCURATE statistical reporting. Give me a break. In the situation above, the man has a much lower chance of dying from a Taser than a double tap.

Should have just shot him! A SWORD! There is no way in this lifetime that I would chance a taser with a guy weilding a sword. Tap Tap end it!
