FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) – A military mental health doctor facing deployment overseas opened fire at the Fort Hood Army post on Thursday, setting off on a rampage that killed 12 people and left 31 wounded, Army officials said.
Authorities said immediately after the shootings that they had killed the suspected shooter, but later in the evening they recanted and said that he was alive and in stable condition at a hospital, watched by a guard.
“His death is not imminent,” said Lt. Gen. Bob Cone at Fort Hood. He offered little explanation for the mistake, other than to say there was confusion at the hospital.
A law enforcement official identified the shooting suspect as Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case publicly.
The violence was believed to be the worst mass shooting in history at a U.S. military base.
The shooting began around 1:30 p.m., when shots were fired at the base’s Soldier Readiness Center, where soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning undergo medical screening, Cone said.
It was unclear what the motive was, though it appeared he was upset about a scheduled deployment. U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison said the Army major was about to deploy overseas, though it was unclear if he was headed to Iraq or Afghanistan and when he was scheduled to leave. Hutchison said she was told about the upcoming deployment by generals based at Fort Hood.

Fort Hood (ABC News/WSYR-TV) – Twelve people have been killed and 31 wounded in a shooting spree at a Texas military base in a murderous rampage that officials believe was carried out by an Army officer.
The suspected gunman was identified by ABC News as Major Malik Nadal Hasan.
Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, R-Texas, told Fox News that military sources informed her that the gunman was about to be deployed to Iraq.
The shooter was killed and two other suspects, who are also soldiers, were taken into custody and later released, according to the office of a Texas congressman. A spokesman for Rep. John Carter says Fort Hood officials informed Carter’s office of the release. Carter’s congressional district includes the Army post.
Hasan allegedly opened fire and killed 11 people on the base before he was shot, bringing the total number of fatalities to 12.

The army has officially recanted the death of the officer. She was wounded during the shoot out but is in stable condition in the hospital. She was credited with stopping Hasan.

Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan,<<<<<Bling...Bling!! Have mercy! And he was a mental health doctor? Now how strange is this? Angry over maybe being deployed? To many questions..to be answered...and to many holes in what I am reading here.
God bless and comfort the families of the fallen.
And quick death to the shooter if he is still alive!

Ok, does his last name raise an eyebrow? Maybe. However....I'm not going to draw conclusions yet based on that alone...this just happened today and as soon as I do my homework and get FACTS then I will draw my own inferences. I have met people with "Muslim" names that actually didn't practice the Islamic faith so I don't try to assume people with an Islamic name are automatically Muslim. However....I can say I hope he gets punished quite severely and I think that's something we can all agree on!
I'm not trying to piss anyone off or anything because I respect that we all have our own opinions....that's the beauty of this country..,this is just my personal opinion.

It sounds like this "Mental Health" Doctor should have his own mental health evaluation a long time ago!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I just thought of this; wasn't there a threat awhile ago at Fort Dix of a shooting? Not at all connecting it but that's what first popped in my head when I first heard of this story.
