Cop Killer On Loose May Be Linked to Car Arsons

SEATTLE — Seattle police are looking for possible ties between Saturday’s fatal shooting of veteran Officer Timothy Brenton in the Leschi area and the torching nine days earlier of four police vehicles at a city maintenance yard.
Both were “very well-planned and targeted attacks,” police spokesman Sgt. Sean Whitcomb said Monday as officials continued to investigate the shootings of Brenton and officer-trainee Britt Sweeney, who suffered minor injuries.
Police officials said Brenton and Sweeney, who came under fire while sitting in a parked patrol car, didn’t appear to be specifically targeted, but were stalked because they were police officers.
Assistant Chief Jim Pugel said the department has been flooded by tips, including some from people saying the shootings and Oct. 22 arson at the maintenance yard on South Charles Street were related.
“We don’t have any connection between this and the Charles Street arsons,” Pugel said. “It would be reckless if we didn’t look at any connection, that was again an attack against police property. It was bold. Because it happened contemporaneously with this, it would be foolish if we didn’t look at it.”
Pugel confirmed that officers are focusing on people who have a history of threatening police.
“We don’t have anything we can arrest on,” he said. “Quite frankly, officers are nervous” about their safety because “there’s nothing to explain why this occurred.”
Pugel said investigators still are reviewing video from the officers’ in-car camera to see if it can help lead them toward a suspect.
The maintenance-yard incident, which remains unsolved, occurred at 714 S. Charles St., near Qwest Field, only a few miles from the site of Saturday’s shootings at 29th Avenue and East Yesler Way.
The arson involved a “considerable amount of time planning and executing,” Whitcomb said. He said he was basing that conclusion on the extent of the destruction and evidence that hasn’t been disclosed publicly.

A lot of good commentary and thoughts on the identities of the shooters out there. As a former WA State police officer and having supervised the JTTF for the FBI in Seattle, the unfortunate thing is there are too many possible suspects out there: a bunch of MS-13 folks have been arrested here lately, some Somalis connected to the Seattle area have been arrested for terrorism-related offenses, WA and OR are hotbeds of the ALF/ELF movement (animal and environmental groups), and other gangs are always doing drive-bys in certain areas of town. This doesn't count the disgruntled whack jobs as noted in avictor's posting--we're still investigating the murder of an Assistant US Attorney here from about 6 years ago!
Add in the fact that the Pac NW has one of the lowest officer per 100,000 population ratios in the country, which made it a magnet in the 70's for survivalists/racial hate groups and others, and you've got a perfect formula for having attacks on law enforcement.
People don't think about OR/WA/ID that way, but there it is--now we can only hope to bring the suspects to justice quickly and safely. That would be the best tribute to Off. Brenton, God rest his soul...

If the P.D. is going public about this being a well-planned attack, it MUST be the priority of all LE agencies in the area to work together to catch this killer. He may be cowardly, but he seems analytical about his actions, making him very dangerous. Stay safe and catch him quick !!!!!!

I would say focus on one officer 's arrest and the others were a cover-up to divert identification of the a-holes actions.
I don't feel like this is a real protest against officers in general but rather one.
The extra stuff is to divert. (think person who slashes every car tire on a street when they are really targeting their ex)
Look at the second attack. Someone this vengeful wold have trouble waiting until after the first to exact their revenge. Maybe even the first attack is the true one.
With little info I predict a guy who felt to good to be brought in for so meting - the type that screams they are suing and act as though they have a big shot lawyer when they do not.
Who had a big fat fit in the last 3 weeks or so when they were brought in?

For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. -Romans 13:4

RIP Brother Benton...The investigators just need to keep their ears open. The facts will come out soon and the one(s) responsible will pay.

If the " person of interest " didn't do this cowardly act i'm sure he knows who is responsible.

I concur with Assistant Chief Pugel, about this being a well planned, well orchestrated hit that is deliberate against police. To think they would back up and turn around giving into access in them being fired upon in return fire, was worth the risk rather than get caught on camera. The person of interest is one to consider, although anyone knows there's more than one perp in this heinous crime. In homeland security we taught fire and police of how the objective of terrorist is to monitor the response of first responders, watch what they did, and then the terrorist would know how to act upon first response whenever they pulled a real incident. Not implying this is related to anything terrorist related, but just resembles a gang type of hit. To pull alongside a police car takes someone very brave or else on drugs where they do not feel a sense of fear, sort of like a false sense of well being. I am sure that every police officer has a concern if the next vehicle will be one that is ready to fire on police. I know that Seattle has viewed the camera of the police unit driven by Sweeney and Brenton during the earlier traffic stop, as maybe passing cars during that period could fit the description of the one that fired on them from point blank range during the hit on them during the time in question. Anyway, I would love knowing that they capture the ones responsible for the macabre act against Law Enforcement. Criminal have 24/7 to plan how they can breach security and overcome or overwhelm the forces of police, as we are definitely outnumbered. We have to go on duty and expect the unexpected, and stay completely focused at all times. With this being a training officer, anyone knows the focus was there, but the elements overwhelmed their ability to prevent, as by the time we can see the threat, and our brain perceive it, and react accordingly, then reaction time is always limited when someone targets someone and acts expeditously at the start to execute their crime. God have mercy on police when we have idiots that are hardcore enough to do this to men and women protecting with their lives those that depend upon us for their safety and security. I pray those responsible get caught and justice is swift and at the maximum. MRPowell
