COLUMBIA, S.C. Authorities say a 42-year-old man who walked away from a minimum-security South Carolina prison turned himself in a day later in North Carolina. State Corrections Department spokesman Josh Gelinas says Vernon Edward Gardner was apprehended about 5 p.m. Tuesday in Lumberton, N.C. That's about 170 miles from the Coastal Pre-Release Center in Charleston. Officials realized he was missing Monday afternoon. Gardner began serving a 7 1/2 year prison sentence in August for violating the state's chop shop law. He now faces a felony escape charge of up to 15 years.
