his was hanging on the patrol car in front of the MPD. It really hit the nail on the head with my father. (per Josh Szuba) 1/ 13 On the Mishawaka PD memorial.
The police officer stood and faced his Maker, which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, police officer how shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To your Maker, have you been true?"
The police officer, with squared shoulders,...said "No sir, I guess I ain't. Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sunday's and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent, because the streets are tough.
But, I never took a penny, that wasn't mine to keep.
Though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills just got too steep.
And I never passed by a cry for help, though at times I shook with fear,
and sometimes, please forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here.
They never wanted me around, except to calm their fears.
But, if you have a place for me here, well...it need not be too grand.
I never expected or had too much, so if you don't...I'll understand."
There was a silence all around the room where the saints respectfully stood.
As the police officer waited quietly for the judgment...bad or good.
"Step forward now, police officer, you've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets, You've done your time in hell."
Someone killed a policeman today and part of America Died.
A piece of our Country he swore to protect will be burued with him at his side.
The beat that he protected was battlefield too, just as if he had gone to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast to his name they will add a gold star.
The suspect that killed him will stand up in court with cousel demanding his rights.
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids and spend many long lonely nights.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today....
maybe in your town or mine, while we were in the comfort behind our locked doors a cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks the beat on a dark city street,
and he stands at each new rookies side.
He answered the call...of himself gave his all,
and part of America Died.
