What branch of service was your beau, and what career field? Whatever his branch of service, tell him the Air Force puke sends him a hearty "HOOAH!" for his service.
Yeah, I myself would like to do the investigative side of law enforcement, which is why I'm applying for ICE (Special Agent, Immigration Enforcement Agent, and Deportation Officer positions). Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my present position with CBP, but all the same, I like to set my sights higher.
Like you, my only qualm is the thought of having to go back to an Academy and be an FNG all over again. The CBP Academy was four months, ICE Special Agent training is freakin' SIX months!
So, how does he like the Bay Area so far? CONGRATS on getting your certification! If and when you do get a cop job up in NoCal (I've got faith in ya, to quote Rob Schneider in "The Waterboy," "You can DO it!" Nyuk nyuk!), maybe you can be this generation's Dirty Harriet! :-)
The Bay Area is a classic example of "fun place to visit, but you don't want to live there!" Beautiful scenaery, but with a few exceptions, like perhaps your Significant Other, it's like a bowl of Fruit 'n' Fiber cereal: once you get past the fruits and nuts, all you have left are a bunch of flakes, nyuk nyuk nyuk! :-)
A southern gal like you will feel like a fish out of water. Them NorCal boys is worse than a bunch of damn dirty thievin' Yankee carpetbaggers!
