- I've been a CHP Officer for 12 years. My first assignment was the South Los Angeles area (3 years). I moved back to the Bay Area and have served as an EMT, FTO, DRE and OST/PMA (arrest/handcuffing/ASP instructor). For the past 6 years I have been assigned a Narcotics Detection K9 (he is also certified in Handler protection/bad guy apprehension). In 2002 I was assigned to the CAMP (outdoor Marijuana grows) task force with DOJ. When my dog retires, I hope to get assigned to Dignitary Protection, Air Ops (Helo Medic) or the Academy. If not I'd go work the road some more since the beat Officers are mostly on 3/12 shifts. I have no desire to promote anytime soon.
