About Me
DISCLAIMER: Since someone unknown hacked into my PL account sometime this summer, I have made my pics and bio available only to invited friends and I changed my password. I have no doubt who did this along with some other identity-theft type actions that occurred at about this same period of time, but I can't prove it, so I won't make accusations so oh well. I DO recommend that EVERYONE closely monitor what is posted in your name, as people who are or used to be close to you can figure out common passwords and personal info (your mother's maiden name, first pet, first car, etc.) and this could be an attempt to embarass. So accordingly, unless I otherwise specifically indicate to the contrary, all opinions, posts, views and positions stated hereon are my own and do not in any way represent the views or bear any connection to my present employer (I am an honorably-retired Chief of a law enforcement agency in NC, hence "Chief"). Here is my bio: I am 46, single and I am retired from the US Army. I was on active status when I was hurt in Iraq, so I retired from active duty. I was as an MP Master Sgt (E-8) w/25 years total service (active Army & USMC, Army Guard and USMC Reserve), including the Gulf War 90-91 in Saudi, Bosnia Operation in Europe 96-97 & most recently Iraq 04-06 when I retired. I am a former US Marine MP! Parris Island, OOH-RAH! I am now in Civil Air Patrol, fun fun! I'm 10th generation born in VA, Scottish, Dutch, English and some Native American-Cherokee Indian (1/32nd) 3 generations back. I've been a civie cop since 84 (where did the time go?) and I was POST academy trained just before I got out of the Corps. I was a NC State Trooper, municipal PD Officer & Sgt., county sheriff's detective and most recently, I retired as Chief of an NC independent school dist. campus PD in 07 to move to AK. In addition to the NC POST training-BLET in 84, I graduated the NC State Trooper School in Raleigh in 85 and I also completed out-of-state officer conversion academy at the Alaska Trooper Academy in Sitka AK, 08 (2 weeks). Excluding MP training, this was my third law enforcement training academy. Including EMT and fire training, I have about 4400 hours. For 12 years, I was off w/pay in the summers (school dist-teacher schedule) so I spent at least 3 weeks each summer in some type of training I enrolled myself in. I have been an instructor since 98 in in NC: Army, FEMA, FLETC, S&W and now here in AK. I taught at the regional police and fire-rescue training academy in NC, for the Army and in several state conferences, where I presented on safe schools. I put on my agency's training in-house (in-service and firearms) and I do investigations and I'm the hostage negotiator now that I am Chief of my Police Department in Interior AK in the middle of the Yukon River back country, halfway between Nome and Fairbanks. It is accessible only by air year-round, by boat in warm weather and snowmobile or dog sled team in cold weather when the river is frozen. The Iditarod comes thru every other year (it came in 08) and the Iron Dog snowmobile race is annual, as is the Yukon 800 River Race. When the river is either freezing or breaking up, only air travel is possible. It gets in the mid 80's here in summer and -60 deg in the winter, but summer peaks can reach over 90F which is HOT here with the sun high in the sky 20 hrs a day! You have to bring in your vehicle by river barge in warm weather unless you're a millionaire and can fly it in on a commercial C-130. The airport here is a former Air Force Base, with a large 7000+ FT runway, the largest airport in the AK Interior Region. This was an F-15 intercept base in the Cold War, the closest to Russia by air. There were outlying Air Force Stations, one up the road at Campion and one 30 miles away at Camp Creek. Now that the Air Force is gone, we have alot of great facilities and equipment to serve the local community. Summer salmon fishing is unreal. Fish are HUGE! Also, for cool stuff to see and do: dogsled racing and boating, hunting and hiking. Alaska is incredibe, beautiful and wild. AK "bush cops" fly incarcerated prisoners to Fairbanks, b/c small PDs have a holding cell only in many cases. AK DOC runs jails b/c there are no sheriffs in AK. We have magistrate's court. Serious injuries or illnesses are treated at local clinics by PAs or ANPs, stabilized, taken by EMS to the Airport and air-evaced to Fairbanks or Anchorage. In addition to a city PD, there is a Trooper post here w/3 AK troopers. One is wildlife, a Trooper-Pilot "brown shirt"; 2 are LE "blue shirts". They work with Village Public Safety Officers (VPSO's ) in neighboring villages, to keep order. We also have a US Fish & Wildlife Service LEO here who is also state commissioned. This area has one of only three public boarding high schools in AK, the Galena Interior Learning Academy (G.I.L.A.), for HS students from across AK. It is a unique and amazing program, offering AK high school diploma program, w/vocational certificates in small aircraft pilot, food service, automotive repair and college prep. Galena's boys basketball team is the 2008 2A champion team for the largest state in the USA! The city school high school program and the GILA program are combined for academics and athletics. GILA offers annual AK Emergency Trauma Tech (ETT-like 1st responder in the lower 48) to HS students. A number of them go on to become Alaska EMTs. B/c we are "off the road system: (not on the connecting highways or ferry routes), some kids never get a drivers license, but graduate from GILA w/a pilot's license, so they can fly a plane legally but not legally drive a car on the road system!!! With the remoteness, the weather and inability drive to the mall or go to a local hospital, life in rural Alaska is not for faint-hearted. I am a former DARE Officer and I have extensive background as a traffic officer, S.R.O., D.A.R.E. Officer, homicide investigator and I have 3 specialized police training certificates of 400-hours from the NC Justice Academy: Community Policing, Criminal Investigation and SRO. I am also an AK and NC EMT. I was an accident investigator in NC and state-certified criminal investigator. I worked also as a detective. I also have my AK Advanced Police Certificate along with the 2 advanced NC law enforcement Certificates (Police Standards Commission, 95, and the Sheriff's Commission, 93). I got my AK general law enforcement certificate in June of 08, along with the advanced, so I now have 3 advanced polce certificates. I also have my BS and some MS credit. I am an instructor and have several train-the-trainers, incuding firearms, DV, counter-terrorism, community policing, active shooter response and school safety & community emergency planner and counter-terrorism. I did a State Dept. mission on counter-terror training in the former Soviet Republic of Moldova. That was so fun, an incredible place but very poor. I also served as an MP in Japan, Germany, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Iraq. I have some credit for my Master right now w/12 credits through Norwich University. Alaska is awesome. I can't begin to describe the frontier life here, it is so cool (literally), though it gets a wee bit warm in the summers (90 for several days here and there) and the coulds of mosquitoes and gnats that are visible by GPS photos are vicious. Slap them and they REALLY get mad!! The interior is a fun and challenging place to be a cop. I have had to put calls on hold b/c a PO'd mama moose cow wouldn't let me out of the bldg. to my truck b/c her baby was nearby! I love being a cop. I love my dogs and enjoying life in beautiful Alaska. Politics: Let me sum it up: Gun control is the ability to hit your target! You want more gun control? Move to Mexico where it is so safe!
