Hi All !
Nice site, glad to be part of it. I am part of the family at Lee County E-911 as of 2 years yesterday, the 26th of March 2009. We dispatch for 18 Volunteer FD's, City Of Tupelo FD, NMMC Ambulance Service, 9 Police Depts including Tupelo Police Dept and Lee County SO. We also dispatch for The Natchez Trace which runs from Nashville, Tn to
Natchez, Ms after hours.
I have spent the other 26 working years of my life in EMS as an EMT for a local Ambulance Service. Thirteen of those as Air Medical/Ambulance Dispatch. Before that....well you know about that short term memory loss ;)
Needless to say....it has been interesting, heartbreaking and damn right funny as hell at times...gotta love it!!!
I have two kids, Tayla Storm, she is a 6 month old Blue Heeler and Tinker whom rules the house!
Life is good....be careful and remember....sometimes you just gotta laugh at the crazy s*it going on out there!
PS Elvis says HI! ;)
Thoughts......
Experience - Experience is more than just how long we have been at the job. It is the sum total of all our life experience up to the present. The importance of experience is that when it is combined with the experience of others it becomes a potent weapons against failure within the unit.
Maturity - More than just physical age, maturity in relation to stress is the emotional age of the person. For instance, a person can be in their forties and still have the emotional maturity of a twelve-year old. The difference between adult and adolescent maturity is a matter of keeping intellect (factual thinking) predominant over emotional thinking (subjective thinking).
Knowledge of the Job - This is pretty simple; if you know your job you are more confident, so you are less likely to lose control in a crisis situation. If you have done it before, you can do it again. Yet those with less knowledge of the job may react differently especially if they have never handled a certain type of call or situation before. This is why training PLUS experience is so important. Knowledge erases fear, and it is fear that precedes the anger that contributes to losing control of the situation.
Nobody, regardless how long they have been on the job knows everything there is to know about all its aspects. There are no "Master Dispatchers". Yet where one person lacks knowledge and experience, there is usually someone else on the same shift that does know and have what the other lacks. This is the strength of being part of a team.

Message the Mississippi Highway Patrol released Friday night to reporters and troopers about the death of Master Sergeant Steve Hood, who was killed in a crash during a pursuit.
Master Sergeant Steve Hood, a 26-year veteran of the Mississippi Highway Patrol and supervisor in Troop F of the New Albany district, was killed in a one-vehicle accident while in the pursuit of a violator. The accident occurred on Mississippi Highway 370 at the Prentiss-Lee county line near the intersection of the Brices Cross Roads Military Park. M/Sgt. Hood's vehicle left the roadway westbound on Highway 370 and struck a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lee County coroner from injuries sustained during the wreck. M/Sgt. Hood is survived by his wife, Lisa, two daughters and a son. Lee County and Prentiss County sheriff's departments, Mississippi Highway Patrol reconstructionists and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are all investigating the cause of the accident. Witnesses have identified a vehicle that was being pursued by M/Sgt. Hood. The investigation continues into the identity for the arrest and apprehension of these subjects. Anyone who has any information regarding the individuals involved in this pursuit should notify the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, Lee County Sheriff's Department or Crime Stoppers. "He was an exemplary trooper and family man. Steve was appointed to the highway patrol in 1982 and was assigned most of his career to Troop F and was originally from the Jericho community. Words cannot measure or state the loss that the patrol and patrol families feel tonight," said Colonel Michael Berthay.
