Make your own Countdown Clocks

My Thoughts for Memorial Day Memorial Day is coming up on May 25. In honor of the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines who have fought and died for the enduring freedom of the United States of America, the flags will be lowered to half-staff at dawn and returned to full-staff at 12:00 noon on that day. At 3:00pm consider taking one minute out of your day to observe a moment of reflection on the price that so many have been willing to pay so that our land can be one where we may worship God in our own way and for many other freedoms that we enjoy daily. Even though Memorial Day is a time to reflect on those who have died in service to our country, it also reminds me of those who have lived or currently live in service of it. These are just a few things that cross my mind on Memorial Day… • To the old guard who have passed – my gratitude for your sacrifice and willingness to live your lives in pursuit of a freedom that endures today. The somber realization that you went into battle on my behalf, without ever having met me, and did not return to your loved ones so that I am daily able to return to mine. Prayers that are too seldom said for your rewards in heaven. • To those who have served and are living today – my heart-felt salute and all the honor and prestige that goes with the deep tradition of it. My condolences for your loss of those friends, brothers and sisters that you fought along-side who did not return home with you. • To those who serve today (my son included) – I bow my head in grateful awe of your willingness to stand your watch and I bend my knee in prayer for your safety, your strength and your courage. If I may step onto my “soapbox” for just a moment; I find that Americans too easily become distracted by the shiny glimmer of our rights and too soon set aside the realization that every right comes with a responsibility; - national responsibility to maintain the true reasons on which our nation was founded – freedom from tyranny and freedom to worship; - community responsibility to hold our leaders to the pledge of being a stalwart defender (not destroyer or modifier) of the constitution and the laws that govern us; - personal responsibility to behave in ways that support the rights of others so that our own rights are preserved by the very lifestyle that we live, and a deep abiding appreciation for those who live out the words “we mutually pledge our lives and our fortunes and our sacred honor”. Those are the words that conclude the Declaration of Independence, which from the very writing of it, the founders knew would cost many Americans their lives in defense of it. Many of them paid that price… scores of thousands since have also paid it. I recently called the roll of honor at the Police Officer’s Memorial service. The, now elderly, son of an officer who had died over fifty years ago commented that he loved this ceremony because it demonstrated that his father’s life was lived for a purpose and that this memorial showed that the purpose was enduring and important. So it is with all who have died for our nation’s freedom. Many known in open battle, some obscured by time, others secretly during some covert operation that may never be spoken of again. All were in the sight of God and now rest in His hand. I hope this Memorial Day finds you well and enjoying your summer time activities; but please take the time to be an American who understands at what price our freedom comes and that this cost is not one that will ever be fully paid. Take time to remember and say “thanks”. God bless and be safe, Terry Turner Chief of Police LeTourneau University
