  "OUR HEROES"
  

  Why do they do it?
  They get yelled at, cursed, assaulted, etc.
  And they keep coming back for more
  They help the child who has wandered away from home
  The drunk who thinks he is sober
  The battered spouse who loves the abuser
  and gives them chance after chance
  The mentally ill person bent on self-destruction,
  Who at the time, does not realize that they are being helped
  Why do they do it?

  Why do they do it?
  They get shot at, blown up, stoned, etc.
  Yet they keep coming back for more
  They go to foreign lands to help the helpless
  They risk their lives day after day
  They get labeled killers, monsters, and evil
  Why do they do it?

  Why do they do it?
  They get punched, kicked, cursed, etc.
  Yet they keep coming back for more
  They run into burning buildings
  To save those in danger
  They put out the fires, and not just of burning buildings,
  But of emotions out of control
  They help the wounded
  They console the dying
  Why do they do it?

  They do it because they are: OUR HEROES!!

  The Final Inspection

  The warrior stood and faced God,
  Which will always come to pass,
  He hoped his shoes were shining,
  Just as brightly as his brass.

  “Step forward now, old warrior,
  How shall I deal with you?
  Have you always turned the other cheek?
  To my church have you been true?”

  The warrior squared his shoulders and
  Said, “No, Lord, I guess I ain’t,
  ‘Cause those of us who carry guns
  Can’t always be saint.

  “I’ve had to work most Sundays,
  And at times my talk was tough,
  And sometimes I’ve been violent,
  ‘Cause the world is awfully rough.

  “But, I never took a penny
  That wasn’t mine to keep.
  Though I worked a lot of overtime
  When the bills got just too steep,

  “And I never passed a cry for help,
  Though at times I shook with fear,
  And sometimes, God forgive me,
  I’ve wept unmanly tears.

  “I know I don’t deserve a place
  Among the people here,
  They never wanted me around
  Except to calm their fears.

  “If you’ve a place for me here, Lord,
  It needn’t be so grand. In life
  I didn’t expect nor need too much,
  So if you don’t, I’ll understand.”

  There was a silence all around the throne,
  Where the saints had often trod,
  As the warrior stood quietly.
  For the judgment of his God.

  “Step forward now, my warrior,
  You’ve born your burdens well,
  Walk peacefully on Heaven’s streets,
  You’ve done your time in Hell.”

  Whats up mr retiree? Been burning up the roads lately? Same ole Same ole at the PD. You are not missing much at all. I bet it is great to sleep in and lounge around. Man I envy you.... ha ha... how many of the umbrella drinks do you do a day??? hee hee...
