"Christine4506" I'm with you... The codes do differ from State to state. And for sure, they are'nt the same here in South Florida.

Agencies are changing to 'plain speak' as result of inability to effectively communicate during multi-agency operations such as Sept 11. Get ready for the new radio- should be in about 2 years- when depts from different cities/states etc can communicate.
If you are on the 'cutting edge' of the transition, you will find that your range is severely (as in dangerously) reduced until new repeaters are up an running.

10 signals are not as useful as in the days of analog and low freq. radios. However, there are still a few messages that demand universal and unmistakable clarity. "Officer needs help" should be the same radio signal, regardless of location. This test shows that it is NOT. Other than that, I think its time for conversational radio traffic. Has anyone tried the "Q" signals used by Miami-Dade police in Florida?

Well, I can tell you that these are not all the same 10 codes that my agency uses.

Liked the quiz. STRONGLY AGREE w/ some type of Nat'l standardization to facilitate multiagency Ops. As for the kids against the codes use, Why not call the "wise guys" or whatever you call em today on your cell phones and tell em ahead o' time your Dept's plans? I see ALL of you on them talking to "somebody" anyway while you're supposed to be on patrol protecting 7 serving the public like us old "Geezers" did.

10 codes would be great if they were the same in all areas! That way if a join operation took place everyone would be on the same page!

Ok...I was not so bad. I think 75%. But, I think that the codes are not completely the same over the entire country.

Some of the codes are different than what we used where I was an officer. For example, we did not have a 10-0. It would be helpful to have a uniform set of codes. Also, depending on the part of the country, some individuals have accents that may be difficult to understand, especially over the radio. Need to keep the ten codes for faster and more accurate communication than "plain speak".

Wow, New Mexico 10 codes are really different on all but the essentials, like 10-9, 10-33, 10-20, etc. I remember Texas 10 codes vaguely (from 30 years ago!!) and those helped some. Yeesh, and I was a dispatcher for a couple of years!! Back to the books, y'all!
