A Nags Head police officer died in a crash this morning in the 3000 block of S. Croatan Highway on his way to a call for a burglary, town officials said. He is the first officer in the town to be killed in the line of duty.
Sgt. Dulan Earl Murray Jr., 48, of Kitty Hawk, was on his way to check out the break-in about 3 a.m. when he lost control of his vehicle, went off the road and hit a utility pole near Nags Head Elementary School, a town news release says.
Murray, who had been with the town since 1997, had more than 26 years of law enforcement experience, the release says.
He leaves behind a wife and two daughters.
In the release, Nags Head Mayor Renee Cahoon calls the loss of Murray “indescribable.”
“Earl Murray was one of the finest, most dedicated officers we’ve ever had,” Cahoon said. “More importantly, though, he was one of the most dedicated family men we’ve ever known.”
The crash is under investigation by the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) -Law enforcement from throughout Southwest Louisiana and even out of state came together today in DeRidder to remember a fallen comrade-- Beauregard Sheriff's Deputy Detective Robbie Beane. Beane is being remembered as a dedicated public servant as well as a devoted family man.
It was a day of sadness and mourning in Beauregard Parish as law enforcement and the community lay to rest one dedicated to protecting and serving others. Thirtyfour year old detective Robert "Robbie" Eugene Beane was killed in a car crash while on a training assignment in Shreveport.
Those like James Thompson, who knew Beane, are heartbroken to have lost him. Thompson went to church with Beane. "(He)was a fine man who passed away and a strong leader in the church. Good praise and worship leader, just an all around good man. The whole community's heart broken because we lost a fine fella."

Officer Down: Lawman Killed In The Line Of Duty

Reporter: Heather King, WITN-TV, www.witntv.com
Lenoir County Sheriff's Detective Allen Pearson has died after a shoot-out on duty.
It has been many years since an officer of the law in Eastern Carolina was killed by gunfire in the line of duty.
According to the Officer Down Memorial web page, Rich Square Police Chief Joseph E. White was shot to death on duty on Sunday, July 16, 2000.
The website says White, 61, was killed with his own .45 caliber service weapon gun. White was shot after stopping a car in connection to a possible gas drive-off at a local gas station. Jason Hebert was arrested for the murder in 2003, in Louisiana.
The most recent death of a law enforcement officer on duty in Eastern Carolina occurred in June 2008. Deputy Steven Christoper Boehm of the Onslow County Sheriff's Office was struck by a vehicle and killed on June 14, 2008.
The Officer Down Memorial website says a New Bern Police Detective was killed two days before Christmas in 2001 when he was off duty. Detective Donald Miller was shot and killed on December 23, 2001. The website says Miller, 33, confronted a man who was driving recklessly in the parking lot of a hospital. Miller was at the hospital after visiting his newborn baby. The site says the driver pulled out a gun and shot Miller in the head; he had been planning a shooting spree at the hospital.

We cops
We cops are a family.
A special kind of family very few outside of law enforcement understand.
As a family, when tragedy strikes
We gather,
We grieve,
We go on.
It’s what we do,
It’s who we are
It’s what our fallen brothers and sisters expect.
It’s what makes us special
It’s what makes us unique
It’s what keeps us sane
It’s what keeps us strong,
It’s what keeps us loyal.
It’s what we are made of,
It’s what we live for,
It’s what keeps us going.
We never dwell on the past,
We never lose our direction.
We never forget
This is who we are
We are cops

When God sent His angels to bring you home, He had His reasons. Someday we will be able to ask why, but for now, we offer prayers of peace and comfort to those left behind. RIP

Last night I lay in bed
My gut sick and sour
pounding in my head
tragedy struck this hour
Knowing something was not right
the void of not knowing
kept awake half the night
while red lights were glowing
While the world lay sleeping
we are alert and awake
vigilant guard he was keeping
making no mistake
All of us connected by fate
a brother now laid
forever to rest on this date
his oath and promise be paid
St Michael Protect Us ...
For we fight the good fight
leaving our families behind
kissing them good night
going back to the grind
Put ourselves in harms way
so that others may rest
knowing we keep evil at bay
being the best of the best
The blue line has been stained
with the blood of a brother
all feel sorrow and are pained
all feel the loss of another
St Michael Protect Us ...
Hunt them down we yell
none will take rest
find the evil from hell
desecrated our crest
Black band across shield
blue blood ties us together
great strength we do wield
stay strong in bad weather
WHEN ONE FALLS, WE ALL FALL ...
St. Michael Protect ALL of US ...

"The Final Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

AGFC wildlife officer dies in helicopter crash
QUITMAN – An Arkansas Game and Fish Commission wildlife officer was killed early Sunday morning when the helicopter he was in crashed in Cleburne County. The officer was participating in an operation aimed at catching night hunters.
The crash took place at approximately 1 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 16 about five miles northeast of Quitman on Highway 25. Killed in the crash was wildlife officer Sgt. Monty Carmikle, 45, of Heber Springs.
The wildlife officer was a passenger in a Bell OH-58 helicopter when it went down in a field on private property. The contract helicopter pilot, Jerry Fryar of Ozark, was taken to a Conway hospital. At this point, his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
This is the first time that an AGFC wildlife officer has died in the line of duty since two officers were killed in a plane crash in the early 70s.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash. At this time, there is no indication of what might have caused the crash.
AGFC wildlife officer Major Mike Knoedl, said that the entire agency is deeply saddened by the death. “Being a wildlife officer is a very dangerous job. We’re trained for just about everything, but in this instance it was out of the officer’s control,” he said
