Wiggy, it depends on the department that you are applying for. Each department is different.
If you were honest about your drug use with the Corps, then you should be okay with most departments. Your HONORABLE DISCHARGE, when it happens, will pretty much supercede the drug use.
This is just my opinion from what I have experienced and have seen in my 11 years combined experience.
Good luck to everyone in this thread!

What about drug use? I used drugs pretty heavy as a teen, but would never think of it today. I have since enlisted in the Marine Corps and it's a past life. Would that be a deal breaker for joining the force?

This site encapsulates the integral fields of law enforcement and what to expect when working towards becoming a law enforcement officer. I also want to stress to anyone who is thinking of becoming an LEO that this is a serious job along with serious laws to enforce, becoming an LEO takes sacrafice along with moral and ethical standards that are above the norm. Only the best candidates are taken to stand behind the badge that they will live by everyday.

I've read this before, and cannot wait until I retire to get started. If I was stationed in UT, I would already be looking at the POST school and working as a reserve. I am in NE though and you have to go thru the academy at Grand Island to work in this state. Oh well, SEO work will get me by for now.

I have done most of these steps, it's not easy at all to obtain a position as an officer! I had an interveiw which was more like an interrogation only to get put on the removal list for a fight that I had with my daughters father when I was 7 and a half months pregnant, she is now 6yrs old! Although I am appealing that decision, it seems like they are looking for perfect people and with the way the world is today we continue to have alot more bad guys than police officers.

Hey Joyce remember these things its is great that the person that you are writing about has never gotten into to trouble. But the real question is who does he know, who can help him get through the process. I know for a fact not getting into trouble does not mean a thing, its all about connections

Please remember being a Veteran does not mean a thing in the Private Sector, Remember if you are a vet and you get five or ten points on a promotional test or placement test, the freinds and family members are getting the actual test and the answers. I can not speak for all states but in New Jersey being a vet does not mean a thing. Vets are passed over for promotion fired for no reason and the Federal Goverment still provides these towns with Grants. What I am trying to tell you Veteran status doesnot mean a thing in the State of New Jersey so if you are planing a Police Career in New Jersey keeps the above facts in mind
