Each agency is different. Find your local agencies Human Recource Department and ask them. Or Google your local department and they usually have steps on employment at the web site. Stop thinking about it and do it!

why do agencies put age limits on the recruits? The one recruiter had to be 280lbs and must have been 50+ . At thirty nine I'm in great shape run a 4.5 40 and a regular athlete. I'll challenge any of these agencies saying I'm to old! Try conditioning your present police and sheriffs it's no wonder some of the bad guys get away they can't keep up! And what about discrimination is not hiring because of age a discriminating act?

Certain agencies have a different approach to selection and testing. Some agencies dont test you at all on police knowledge during selection due to the fact that they believe that one cannot possibly know how to handle ones self as an officer if one has not yet had the formal training in law enforcement. On the other hand, knowledge is power and the more you know, the more you know. It doesnt hurt to learn more and can only help you. Like the article says, talk to your local PD or Trooper recruiter. They will tell you everything they feel you should know before you even fill out the initial application. Any questions can be answered by them. Never be afraid to ask questions! Read articles, learn about police work online, talk to your local law enforcement agencies,it can all only help.

Be 100% honest in your backgrounds. Honesty is the best policy no matter what anyone else says. Your honesty will reflect upon your integrity.

Good luck everybody who hopes to one day work in law enforcement and, thank you to all those that currently work in law enforcement.

Just an update.......I have attended 3 out of the 9 classes in the citizen's acadamy & I have to say the classes are very interesting. Although I'm in a small town some of the things I have heard & seen are interesting. I have been telling my oldest daughter what goes on in these classes & now she wishes she had applied to go. The more I go to these classes the more I'm thinking about trying to join the force.

Hi my name is Josh. I live near St.louis on the Illinois side of the river. I really want to go into law enforcement but i dont know what steps to take first and all. Ive got a 21 month old son and work with an airline currently so my days are somewhat busy but i do get time off. What i want to know is where to go and where to start and which would be the best for me to do. Im willing to take all the steps and any challenge to get there. Im up for any suggestions.

I've been thinking about joining the law enforcement field & I've taken the 1st step to see what's it like. Where I live the Police Dept. sponser an acadamy for citizens & I'm happy to say that I applied & was accepted. They show you all different kinds of fields in law enforcement. Needless to say I'm excited & nervous about it but I'm going to give it my best shot!.........
