For CA residents:
1) Go to the Police Academy and do well.
2) Apply at the agencies you want to work at.
3) You will go to an Oral Interview
Upon passing the interview you might do a Chief / Capt. interview. If you pass this interview.
4) A background would be next. Depending on the agency a Polygraph might be required too.
5) Upon passing the background and/or polygraph you will do a full physical and a psychologycal test.
6) Upon passing that you will be offered the job.
However, most police dept. have a probationary perior of 6 months to a 1 yr. During that perior you can be laid off for any reason. So, do your best at doing the right thing ALL THE TIME!!!
Things that will help you to become a police officer:
1) Education / Degrees such as AS, BS/BA, Master, PhD.
2) Military
3) Clean background.
4) Good work history
5) Good references
6) Good credit.
If you have too much debt to income ratio you might not be picked up until you pay some of your passed due bills.
Or if you filed bankruptcy, you need to explain this in the background package.
YOU WILL PUT ALL YOUR LIFE IN THE BACKGROUND PACKAGE. IF YOU OMIT ANYTHING, YOU WILL BE DISQUALIFY BECAUSE THE DEPT. WILL FIND OUT THAT YOU ARE HIDING SOMETHING, AND YOU'LL BE PORTRAYING YOURSELF AS A LIER.

I would like to know which agency pays the most? Is race really a factor when it comes to the hiring process? Does your GPA matter if you just graduated from college?

babymalachi- The only advice I can give is to not wait for opportunities to start opening the door to you, you have to open that door yourself.

I am taking classes for criminal justice,I would love to become a detective. I wanted to know if my brothers background history would effect my opportunities when becoming a police. I have one brother who's in a federal jail and the other is locked up for attempted murder. I know that a family background history is done. Will this help me or hurt me?

I am looing for some info if anyone can help. I am 38 (39 in may) obviously I am too old for the academy, I had planned to get my degree and go , but I was in a M.V.A.(8 years ago) now that I am capable of going ,my age is stopping me,so my question is, do I have to have a degree to pursue anything else in law enforcement, ie: .C.O, dispatcher, police secretary, anything to get my foot in the door. I am very smart, extremely motivated and want this more than anything, so if anyone can help me out, i would be very appreciative. I amnot sure how many credits I have from college, but I did complete all the intro courses to criminal justice.thank you all , hope there is still hope for me. JAN email janf69@yahoo.com
