Step 5: Get Ready for the Exams

There are many companies out there that offer study guides for generic law enforcement exams. If the recruiter you spoke to recommended one over another – buy it and study it from cover to cover. The exam is often times your key into the rest of the application process. Do good, because if you’re applying with multiple agencies, you can expect that your results will be shared amongst the recruiters. Here are some more study tips for you:

I totally agree with your article. Study from a multitude of training exam books...I borrowed from my library and did the tests over & over. I even practiced the tests from different states in case on the state test they had a sampling from all over. When I took the Police exam this April(2009) I found many similar scenarios from the exam books I had been studying from. I also skimmed through some of my Criminal Justice textbooks on some basic court cases(like the whole part of the Miranda case), just so I would be familar with them. If your town/city offers a Civilian Police Academy I'd try it out...I went on lots of ride-alongs and they do help to 'open' your eyes about what cops do on a every day basis. It is not all fun & excitement. It did give me a chance to meet some really great people that just happen to have really cool jobs. Seeing what their jobs were like, helped to push me toward Security which has now helped to push me back toward Law Enforcement. GuardDog45

I have been asking officers different question anytime I happen to run across one. This is definately a good resource for direct answers to any question you may have. I haven't done any ride alongs, but the suggestion is remarkable, I will most definately be doing that as well as purchasing the study guides. Thank you for the information...

Im taking the test on Sat. It seems that the test is a little different depending on the "agency" you are applying for. I'm going for Transit but seems that the test is a little different than county, state or sherriff department. Also Washington Metro is the only agency that they give its officers arrest powers in the tri-state(DC, Md, and Va) locals...

I am wanting to get into law enforcement. I have applied with several (the local Sherrifs Department most recently) agencies. It seems like my toughest challenge is with the oral boards. I feel like I belong in law enforcement and have had former officers that got to know me say I would do well, but am having a difficult time getting hired. Does anyone have any suggestions or words of encouragement?
