Dont be afraid to stand up for yourself w/in the dept. Many FTOs are jerks and will stop at nothing to make sure you know you're a "boot." This is especially true if you're a lateral. Some will focus more on seeing what you're made of rather than teaching you how to be a street cop. If you find a personality conflict developing, tell your sarg and get a new FTO if need be.

There might be some on the job for a while, but still have no common sense. Especially those who thinks himself or herself as a jail house lawyer.

Don't forget to laugh! (When appropriate of course.) I always tell rookies that if you don't laugh at least once during a shift, you're doing smething wrong. This job'll kill you if you don't have a sense of humor.

WE live in a world where you will be judged by your first remarks, work constantly to make them if not appropriate then at least not filled with epithets or foul and abusive language! Even when you are immediately embroiled in a physical struggle, try to keep your language neutral. It can make the difference in whether you are making a positive or negative difference.

Think of the public as if they were customers, try to always address them as "How may I help you?" Even then if you have to give them a negative remark they remember that your first priority was to try to help.

Don't try to impress the veteran officers. This generally leads to that Top 10 list. Just be safe and do the job the way the Dept wants it done. That way we can all go home safe at the end of our shifts.
